Section on Women’s Health – CSM update 2011

It has been about a month since CSM in New Orleans (Feb 8 to 5, 2011).  As usual the meeting was a great success with awesome educational programming, a wonderful exhibit hall, productive networking, and a bit of fun on the side.  This year was a bit different for me as I did not have loads of meetings and was able to really get the flavor of CSM from all angles. I do not have the final numbers but I did hear we continue each year to have higher attendance.  This year over 8,000 attended. Thanks to all the volunteers who make CSM such a great success.

Highlights from Beth
  • Twenty one new WCS (including yours truly) and one more women’s health residency were honored at the opening ceremonies.
  • The exhibit hall was particularly dynamic with new products, books and courses.  (see my previous posting for information about a new EMG for PFM dysfunction http://tinyurl.com/4tanwa8   )
  • APTA published a daily newspaper available in the CSM web site.  It is an interesting summary.
  • SOWH platforms provided a glimpse of some awesome research.  I look forward to the full publication of these works.
  • SOWH has 21 posters representing a wide variety of women’s health.  I look forward to the publication of these abstracts.
  • Lectures I found stimulation
    • The role of the pelvis in hamstring pain (great speaker) Look for my review of Diane Lee’s new edition of The Pelvic Girdle in the Journal of Women’s Health PT.
    • The coccyx and the impact on elimination sand sexual dysfunction (I bought this tape)
    • Bone Camp advanced yoga concepts and postures for skeletal health and safety – another very dynamic speaker and although some of the concepts are basic, every women’s health PT how treats osteoporosis should hear Sarah Meeks speak – she has a passion that is contagious.
    • New technologies in the treatment of lymphedema – great speakers, timely topic, eye opening research. (I bought this tape also)

For those of you who did attend
  • csm handouts More handouts have been posted and will remain posted till July 28, 2011.  Also remember to look at the sponsoring sections handouts.  For instance, the handout for “New technologies in the treatment of lymphedema” is not located in the SOWH handouts – but in the section on oncology.
  • Please remember to thank our sponsors for their support.

For those all pelvic PTs
  • You can purchase audio files http://resrec.com/shop/apta/index.php/2011-csm.html  click on the link at the top of the page “2011 CSM New Orleans”.  This creates a pull down menu from which you can pick “Women’s’ Health” or which ever section sponsored the lecture.  Audio files can be purchased as downloads or a CD can be purchased and will be mailed.  (I am still waiting for the CDs I purchased at the meeting to arrive).

CSM is often referred to as the time to recharge.  However, it is very easy to loose that charge over the ensuing weeks and months after CSM.  Don’t loose the excitement of learning and networking.  Stay connected.  Reach out and participate.  Join this bog and receive notification of postings – summary of conferences, new products, new books, research and policy.  Also consider joins me in the Pelvic Physiotherapy Distance Journal Club .
